Minimum Requirements

Employment Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen
  • Must have a High School Diploma or GED
  • Must be at least 20 years and 3 months to apply
  • Must be 21 years prior to completing our training academy
  • Must possess a valid driver's license
  • Must pass a written and physical agility test (laterals exempt from the written test)
  • Must pass an extensive background investigation, including a polygraph, psychological, medical and drug screening

What will disqualify you?

  • Felony convictions
  • Domestic violence convictions
  • Admission to act of theft or fraud within 5 years
  • Conviction of or plea of guilty or no contest to any misdemeanor involving moral turpitude, including petit larceny, any misdemeanor sex offense, or any domestic assault.
  • Conviction of a serious violation such as Hit & Run or attempting to elude Police.
  • DUI/DUID within 5 years.
  • More than one conviction of DUI/DUID in a lifetime
  • Use of Schedule 1 drug within 4 years
  • Use of any Schedule 2 drug for an intentionally illicit purpose within 4 years
  • Illegal use of any drug more than minimal experimentation after age 21
  • An accumulation of 8 or more points on driving record within the past 3 years
  • Dishonorable or Bad Conduct discharge from Military
  • Visible tattoos (face and head) 

Test Dates

In order to test, you must have an active application with the Richmond Police Department and have been assigned a testing date through the Police Personnel Division.
