Adoption is the best option
By adopting a pet from Richmond Animal Care & Control, you not only get a furry friend but you also help us make space for animals in need. Click below for more details about our adoption process.
- You must be 18 years of age or older to adopt an animal
- A current photo ID (driver’s license or state ID card) is required
- We accept cash, Visa/Mastercard, or money order as payment
- Please bring a carrier for your adopted kitty or a leash and collar for your adopted dog
- All cats/dogs will be spayed/neutered prior to adoption
- Rabbits will go home with a spay/neuter certificate
- Resident dogs must attend the meet-and-greet for dog adoptions
- Kittens 4 months or younger must be adopted in pairs or have another cat in the home
- We reserve the right to refuse any adoption
At RACC, our focus is on same-day adoptions. Anyone interested in adopting an animal, along with all household members, must visit the shelter in person to meet and interact with the animal(s). During the visit, RACC staff will ask a series of questions to determine if the animal(s) would be a good fit. Once an appropriate match is made, the prospective adopter will need to complete an adoption application, which will be reviewed and approved or denied immediately.
For dog adoptions, any resident dogs must also attend the meet-and-greet. Kittens 4 months or younger must be adopted in pairs or have another cat at home to ensure proper socialization and prevent Single Kitten Syndrome.
Adoption fees cover the cost of spay/neuter surgery, flea/tick prevention, age-appropriate vaccinations, deworming, microchipping, heartworm testing (for dogs 6 months and older), and FeLV/FIV testing (for cats).
- $100 adoption fee for dogs, puppies 5 months or older, cats, and kittens
- $150 adoption fee for puppies 4 months or younger
- Cats and kittens may be adopted two for the price of one
- Adoption fees may be waived for medical or space reasons at management discretion

Our Foster to Furever adoption program is designed to give you a trial run before making a lifelong commitment. This way, you and your future furry friend can spend a week together to see if you’re the perfect match. Here’s everything you need to know:
Eligibility Requirements:
- Dogs 6 months or older are eligible for the Foster to Furever adoption program
- The $100 adoption fee is required to participate
- All dogs must be spayed/neutered before leaving the shelter
- Due to the rapid adoption of our cats, this program is only available to the dogs in our care
- Dogs listed on social media as available by appointment-only are not eligible for this program
The Foster Period:
- The trial foster period lasts 7 days
- During this period, our Adoption Coordinators will be your go-to point of contact to offer support and help with any questions or concerns
